A few years ago when I was taking photography classes at the Art Institute, a professor told me not to have an album of my photography equipment. He said, "Nobody cares."

Well, this is not his website. It's mine and I care. And frankly, you should care, too, because as you can see in the pictures below, I am well equipped to handle any job.

From my new Nikon 300mm f/2.8, the "King" of portrait lenses to the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VRIII "The Beast" of all wedding lenses to the Zeiss 85 f/1.4, six elements in five groups manual focus "Titan" of all 85mm lenses, I have some of the best glass to capture your moments. And I'm very passionate about my gear.  Everything is in perfect working condition.

Let's start with the cameras. While I'm up to seven bodies, I have been primarily shooting with the new Nikon D850 for the last year. It was the first camera to receive a "Perfect 100" rating and is a 46 megapixel beast. 

This means it has roughly twice the resolution of most other cameras on the market today. Why does that matter? Because my images are much sharper and images from other cameras almost seem fuzzy in comparison.

I'll try to keep this short, but lens design is hugely important in the output of an image. By output, I mean image quality, or rendition. Photography is the recording of light and how light is transmitted through a lens is very important on how an image turns out. This is determined by lens design and construction. Specifically, how is the lens designed, how many elements and what type of elements and how are they arranged.

If you stuff a lens full with 24 different elements to "correct" for every conceivable "fault" like vignetting or chromatic aberration then you are going to have images that are low in contrast and muted colors. But, if you use a well designed lens that uses fewer elements that are made of high quality glass, you get images that POP and have lots of depth. Once that "depth" is lost using "over-designed" (modern) lenses, you can never get those subtle qualities of an image back through image processing. People look at my images and the remark on what an impact they have. Starting with the right lens is the first step of a fabulous image. It matters.

Possibly the most important element of photography after composition is LIGHTING. And there are many kinds, types and qualities of light that a photographer uses to make an image. But, unless you have and use a studio strobe or higher quality speedlight then you are at the mercy of available lighting. There are two critical contributions that strobe lighting brings to an image. First is the character or mood of an image that is created by the mixture of highlights, midtones and shadows on a subject but just as importantly the saturation on the sensor when the image is recorded. Yeah, that sentence right there could be all you need to know after three years of photography college classes but what does it mean? It means, your camera records light and a studio strobe fills the sensor with information about your subject as you intended in a SPLIT second.

I own six of the best studio strobes on the market. Two 1000 watt strobes, two battery-powered 500 watt strobes and two portable 300 watt strobes which I use to create any lighting setup I want anywhere.


Light Modifiers

You can't just point a studio strobe at a model and get a great shot. The light needs to be modified. Shown above are just five of my many many light modifiers I have for my studio. Each creates a different character of light, whether its big soft light that makes women look younger, or hard light through a grid that provides a spot hair light for the perfect headshot. Or maybe its narrow lighting that provides perfect rim lighting.


Allow me to summarize this page by saying, gear matters. You need to have the right tools for the job. And this is just the bulk of it. Not pictured are the memory cards or the computers or props or backdrops, the insurance, the furniture, the actual studio and so much more that goes into a successful photo shoot experience that produce amazing images.
